Draft — pending attorney review. This document is a working draft prepared for legal review and is not yet final. It may contain placeholders and is provided for transparency, not as a binding agreement in its current form.

Storage & Abandonment Policy

What this means — plain-English summary, not legally binding; the full text below governs.

  • We store your mail and packages while your account is active and for a limited time after it closes.
  • If items go unclaimed for a long time, or your account closes and mail is left behind, we follow a defined waiting-and-notice process before we do anything final with them.
  • We will try to reach you before disposing of anything, and you can reclaim items (and settle any fees) during the waiting period.
  • Some actions, like secure shredding, cannot be undone.
  • We will not dispose of anything that is subject to a legal hold or a lawful request from authorities.

1. Scope

This policy explains how long we keep mail and packages, what happens to items that are unclaimed or left after account closure, and the safeguards before any disposition. It is part of the Terms of Service and works with the Mail Handling Agreement, Package Policy, and Shredding Authorization.

2. Storage while active

While your account is active, we store your mail and packages under the Mail Handling Agreement. Free storage windows and storage fees are described in your account and on our pricing page.

3. Unclaimed items

An item is “unclaimed” when it has been available in your account for longer than the applicable window without instructions from you and, for packages, after any free-storage period has passed. Before taking any final action on an unclaimed item, we will attempt to notify you using the contact methods on file and give you an opportunity to provide instructions.

4. Account closure and mail wind-down

When your account closes, we stop accepting new mail as of the effective date and enter a wind-down period of approximately [WIND-DOWN PERIOD — set by counsel] during which remaining mail and packages can be forwarded or returned per your instructions. You are responsible for updating your address with senders before closing your account and for paying any outstanding forwarding, postage, and storage charges.

5. Waiting period before disposition

We will not dispose of, shred, or otherwise finally handle unclaimed items until an appropriate waiting period has passed and required notices have been given. As placeholders subject to counsel’s determination:

  • Mail: retained for approximately [MAIL RETENTION PERIOD] after it becomes unclaimed or after account closure.
  • Packages: retained for approximately [PACKAGE RETENTION PERIOD] after arrival or after account closure.
  • Notices: we will attempt to reach you at least [NUMBER] time(s) before any disposition.

During the waiting period, you may reclaim your items by giving instructions and paying any outstanding fees. The bracketed periods above are placeholders and are not final until set by counsel in line with applicable law.

6. Disposition

After the waiting period and required notices, and if the item remains unclaimed:

  • Documents and mail may be securely shredded, as described in the Shredding Authorization.
  • Packages and goods may be returned, donated, or disposed of as the law allows, after any lien or fee-recovery process the law requires.

Secure shredding and disposal are irreversible. Once an item is shredded or disposed of, it cannot be recovered.

7. Legal-hold and lawful-request carve-out

We will not dispose of, shred, or destroy any item that we know is subject to a legal hold, litigation preservation obligation, or a lawful request or order from postal or other authorities. Such items are retained until the hold or obligation is resolved, regardless of the waiting periods above.

8. Outstanding fees

Disposition of unclaimed items does not waive fees you owe. We may pursue outstanding charges as allowed by law and the Terms of Service.

9. Changes and contact

We may update this policy with notice as described in the Terms of Service. Questions: support@myeveraddress.com.
